“Of all the crazy ass things I’ve done and seen in the last year, that probably takes the cake.” Ratt shifted the heavy goggles up onto his forehead and rubbed his eyes. Sighing, he fixed his goggles back in place and looked out at the vast maze of otherworldly smoke before him.

“The course is set,” he said aloud. “I sure hope we know what we’re doing.”

After the Hermit’s “guest,” the legendary Republic General Hawkings, had arrived, the ancient exiled Annunaki had laid out his plan for the endgame. It was a multi-faceted, somewhat convoluted, certainly risky, if not downright insane strategy.

After the Hawk’s initial shock wore off, the Hermit had explained to Ratt how to repair the Engine. Together, they had done so, with the general bearing witness. It was a simple matter of joining together into a meditative trance. The Hermit had shaped a Strange that exposed the code of the Engine to Ratt and held it fast, allowing for Ratt to scan it, intuitively recognizing the pattern within it and where the pattern had been disrupted. Hawkings watched as a scene-scape of all things that had come to pass and that may come to pass played out before them, dancing on the walls of the Hermit’s hut like some kind of immersive cinema from Ratt’s pre-Storm collection. With the core of the correspondence point opened and frozen in place, Ratt went to work, “grabbing” the strings of ethereal light with his mind’s eye and rearranging them until the pattern made sense and looked correct to his logical way of thinking.

As he slid the last string of the broken pattern into place, the whole image pulsed once with a surge of light, then disappeared without a trace.

“It is done,” the Hermit had announced. “The Engine is fully functional once again. Now, we must prepare the rest.”

The Engine had been repaired. Ratt knew they were practically handing Umbra unlimited power on a silver platter. Hawkings would return to Home’s recent past and work to make the New Republic appear so weak that its conquest would be nigh-irresistible to the newly leveled-up Prince of Hell.

They would lay their trap and catch the Harvesters off guard and overconfident. It sounded good. Sort of. Actually, it sounded completely mad. But Ratt came to understand that they had no other way forward. It had to work. If it didn’t, it would mean the end of everything. The dawn of the age of Umbra. It simply had to work.

“Only one little problem,” Ratt mused. For any of this to even have a slight hope of success, they needed Jon to find them, rescue both Maya and the Knight, and somehow remember what the true Anvil was.

“What could possibly go wrong?”

As if in answer to his verbal tempting of fate, the wall nearest him flashed and popped, sending forth a smattering of the telltale black-and-white cubes. Ratt recoiled, shielding himself from the close-proximity pseudo-drop that was forming when the Whoomp and gust of extra-dimensional wind knocked him to his knees.
